The Budapest Commitments in Vienna I: How it started
CJ Fürst, L Radbruch

The concept of the “Budapest Commitments” was launched at the EAPC Budapest Congress in June 2007 as collaboration between EAPC, the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care, IAHPC and the World Palliative Care Alliance, WPCA. The aim is to encourage national associations to commit themselves for one or several achievable goals in the development of palliative care. The Commitments, including the goals, the methods to reach the goals as well as the means of follow up are published on the EAPC website. Commitments from palliative care associations in the following 18 countries are available: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and The United Kingdom. The presentation of the commitments and the follow up of the results is an excellent opportunity to share experiences, success and resistance to change in countries with different history of palliative care, different organisation of health care and different economical resources.

The Budapest Commitments in Vienna II: Results so far and the future
L Radbruch, CJ Fürst

Budapest Commitments, including the goals, the methods to reach the goals as well as the means of follow up are published on the EAPC website. Twenty two palliative care associations in 18 countries have contributed their commitment. The Commitments include a wide range of topics, from education, research, networking, public awareness, policy and quality to definition of standards and volunteers. Different organisations have reached different levels of fulfilment of goals and success. The commitments have been used as an incentive to initiate national advocacy projects. EAPC will explore possible ways of supporting the member organisations in their work with the Commitments. The experience of the Budapest Commitments can serve as an inspiration for organisations in other European countries and around the globe.
