Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Organising Committee it is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the 11th Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care, to be held at the Austria Center in Vienna 7 - 10 May 2009.
Austria as a destination for meetings dates back to 1815, when the capital of the former Habsburg empire hosted the peace talks following the Napoleonic Wars, the famous Congress of Vienna . To this day, Vienna is a melting-pot of diff erent cultures and people, situated in the centre of Europe and a communication point between East and West. We wish to use this unique opportunity to facilitate the discussion of various view points and developments within palliative care concerning medical, social, ethical, political, and economic areas. The last congresses of the European Association for Palliative Care in Aachen and Budapest have shown the international reputation of the EAPC as reaching far beyond Europe and we would like to extend a special invitation to our colleagues from all over the world.
The theme of our congress "Committed to People", beautifully reflected by our logo representing the "Tree of Life", accurately describes the main objective of palliative care: to focus primarily on the individual. Palliative care is an issue of life and quality of life in face of a life-threatening disease is one of its main goals.
The programme for the congress is being prepared with much care and enthusiasm. In particular, we would like to thank the members of the Scientific Committee and their chair Prof. Dr. Friedemann Nauck, who have designed the outstanding scientific content and succeeded in attracting a stellar cast of international speakers. We hope that you will join us for elucidating presentations, stimulating discussions, and exciting contributions. Also, the Organising Committee has put much eff ort in selecting an exquisite social programme providing you with a touch of our local cuisine combined with imperial performances.
We are proud that the EAPC Board of Directors has placed the 11th Congress in our hands, and we very much look forward to seeing you in Vienna !
