Mission Statement

I am a health psychologist with a background in nursing and am currently Help the Hospices Chair in Hospice Studies based at the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University, UK. I co-direct a large five year programme of collaborative research and development called the Cancer Experiences Collaborative with Professor Juila Addington-Hall, which brings together five leading universities in the UK. My research agenda focuses on the role of hospices in the UK and internationally, and I hold a special interest in end-of-life care for older people and bereavement support. Previously, I have established and directed research groups at the universities of Sheffield and Southampton and have secured a number of major research grants and supervised over 20 PhD students. I also teach at postgraduate level about palliative care and qualitative research methodology. I publish widely in academic and professional journals, written ten books, and edit the ‘Health Psychology’ book series published by the Open University Press with Sandra Horn. I was a Trustee of St Luke’s Hospice, Sheffield and therefore have insight into organisational issues in palliative care. I am presently active in a number of UK palliative care organisations including the Palliative Care Research Society. I believe that my knowledge of research and policy issues in palliative care can contribute to the development of the EAPC.
