Palliative Care for older People: Better Practice – an EAPC Task Force

Populations in European and other developed countries are ageing, and more people are now living with the effects of serious chronic illnesses towards the end of life. Meeting their needs presents a public health challenge. A new EAPC task force was established in September 2007 aiming to improve palliative and end of life care for older people by publishing a high profile appraisal of examples of good and promising practice around Europe, along with feasible recommendations for care, research and education that will be widely influential in Europe and beyond.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this project is to develop a new WHO guide to promote better palliative care and end of life care for older people. The WHO guides Palliative Care: The Solid Facts (Davies & Higginson, 2004) and Better Palliative Care for Older People (Davies & Higginson, 2004) explain why health services should provide good quality palliative care for older people, with a brief outline of how it could be improved. This project seeks to build on these guides to provide examples of better palliative care practice, to aid those involved in planning and supporting care-orientated services in the most appropriate and effective way. The new guide will include links to information in other WHO guides and provide brief case studies of good and promising practice along with evidence of their effectiveness and, were possible, cost-effectiveness. The generalisability of the examples to other contexts, cultures, and health care systems will be considered. It will conclude with recommendations for care in different settings, for education and research. A group of international contributors are participating in planning and developing the guide. The project is funded by the Maruzza Lefebvre D’Ovidio Foundation.

DO YOU KNOW OF EXAMPLES OF BETTER PRACTICE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE GUIDE?

We are conducting a continuing call for examples of better practice in palliative care for older people for a new WHO guide – Palliative Care for Older People: Better Practice.

If you know of an example which you would like to be considered for the guide, please read the information sheet, complete the form and return it to us according to instructions in the information letter by 30th July 2008. We are grateful for helping us with this project.
