Proposed definition

An intractable symptom is one that has not responded to multiple targeted interventions to a degree that provides acceptable relief to the patient; and for which further targeted interventions cannot be reasonably expected to be successful within an acceptable period of time; or for which available interventions would be too burdensome for the patient; or for which other known interventions are not available to the care team. This definition assumes that all reasonable efforts have been made to determine the cause of the symptom and that interventions have had the goal of both addressing the cause and relieving the patient’s distress.
