Meaning and Spirituality in End of Life Care
Breitbart, William,Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, US

This presentation will review concepts of spirituality and the integral construct of meaning. A newly developed psychotherapy intervention for terminally ill cancer patients called ‘‘meaning-centered psychotherpy’’, based on the concepts of Viktor Frankl, will be described. Preliminary data of a randomized controlled trial of meaning-centered versus supportive group psychotherapy will be presented. These results indicate that meaningcentered psychotherapy has promise as an intervention to help sustain hope and meaning, and decrease despair at the end of life, in the context of advanced cancer.
