Effectiveness in control symptom in palliative care services in Spain

Introduction: The effectiveness of palliative care has been demonstrated in many differents studies (Hearn, Higginson, Wilkinson,...).In Spain there isn' t enough evidence from clinical results.
Objective: To demonstrate tha the palliative care teams intervention improve symptom contol, in Spain.
Method: A descriptive, multicentric and longitudinal study. Subject to study: Advanced cancer patients in symptomatic treatment in their first visit in palliative care team (inpatient, outpatient and home care) We try to prove in a short period of time (a month) in three determinations (first, third and seventh days) the improvement in a visual analogue scale (0-10) in three of most prevalent symptoms (pain, anxiety and other).
Findings: We?ll show the preliminbary results in this congress. we'll start the study in Jan-04 and finish in Jun-04.
Conclusions: 1) To confirm the effectiveness of spanish palliative care teams intervention in the control of symptom in a big sample of population. 2) It will be necessary to analyze more items and more period of time in the future.
