Biella’s Palliative Care Network operates since the beginning of 2001 within the local Public Hospital, in patients homes and at the Hospice ‘‘Orsa Maggiore’’: personnel of the Public Local Health District and of several noprofit Organizations take part in the Palliative Care Network. Approximately 200,000 people live in the Biella Area, situated in the northern part of Italy. In collaboration with the Cancer Register of Biella Public Health District, we have conducted an analysis of place of death for cancer patients living in our region during the years 1998-2002: our aim is to study the impact of the activity of our Palliative Care Network on this parameter, and the changes of the situation during these years. Our analysis was conducted both evaluating the number of cancer patients dead in hospital during these years and studying the death certificates of the residents in our area. During the year 2000, 295 cancer patients died in Biella Hospital (on a total number of 958 deaths), during 2001, 222 (on a total number of 792 deaths) during 2002, 166 (on a total of 744 deaths). The percentage of cancer patients, residents in our area, died for cancer in Biella Hospital or in other Hospitals was 51.1% during the year 1998 and 25.4% in 2002. These results show a significant change, during these years, of the place of death for cancer patients living in our region, with the beginning of the activity of the Palliative Care Network. We observed a great reduction of cancer deaths in Hospital, with the increasing possibility for patients to obtain end of life care at home or in hospice.
