Focussing on the situation in the city of Antwerp (Belgium), our research project aims at mapping the attitudes of elderly Moroccans towards death, dying, palliative care and other EOL decisions. After having reviewed about 200 research reports, we reached two important conclusions. First of all, the influence of the factor ‘religion’ received until now but marginal attention. Secondly, we could hardly find any data (gathered nor reported) on the attitudes of people belonging to non-Christian religions towards death, dying, palliative care and other ethical decisions at the EOL. Further more, the problems the Moroccans are facing in Belgium are huge, which, in the majority of cases, leads to a marginalisation in education, employment and on the broad social level. An illuminating example is the fact that, although Islam has become the religion with the second most worshippers in Belgium, it still is dealt with as a ‘religious minority’. As a result, the opinions on-and needs for-palliative care of the Islamic community in Belgium are not taken into account in the debates. If the Islamic community has specific needs regarding palliative care, this gap has to be bridged in the debates on and organisation of palliative care. The study contributes to related fields as the turn to empirical ethics, policy making, lived Islam in Belgium, comparative ethics and comparative religion. A lot of highly specific methodological questions come into play for this qualitative study, set against the theoretical background of symbolic interactionism (n = 15, 3 in-depth interviews per person, Grounded Theory Approach) of a subgroup difficult to reach. Preliminary results will be presented at the research forum, but the focus of the presentation will be on methodological problems.
