EPCRC - Seeking experts on depression

We are seeking experts from across Europe to participate in a panel which will play a key role in drawing up European a clinical guideline for the treatment of depression in palliative care.

This project is part of the work undertaken by the European Palliative Care Research Collaborative (EPCRC - http://www.epcrc.org) which is drawing on eight centres from six European countries (UK, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Norway) to develop standardised assessment and individualised treatment plans for pain, depression and cachexia.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a wide range of experts from across Europe. You may represent any of the following groups but we are interested in anyone who has an expertise in this area:

• clinical psychologists specialising in physical illness / palliative care
• general practitioners
• palliative care consultant physicians
• palliative care nurse specialists
• patients
• pharmacologists
• psychiatrists specialising in physical illness / palliative care

What does participation in the expert panel involve?
The final guideline will be published on the Internet in November 2009. Over the course of the project, you will participate in several virtual meetings of the panel (ie we will not meet face-to-face but will communicate using email and conference calls). You will be asked to:

• complete a questionnaire about your current practice in treating depression and outline what you would do in a number of given scenarios
• discuss a suggested clinical guideline for the management of depression
• review colleagues’ comments on this guideline
• suggest relevant research literature if not detected by systematic review and evidence searches
• discuss a revised guideline which is based on systematic review of the literature using the Delphi technique whereby consensus is sought from a panel of independent experts
• take part in the finalisation of the guideline

Members of the expert panel will be asked to declare any conflicts of interest.

The contribution of expert panel members will be acknowledged in the published guidelines.
