Glenview, IL, February 2, 2009 – The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine is pleased to announce the first 48 fellowship programs in hospice and palliative medicine have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). ACGME is responsible for the accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the United States. The Council approved program requirements for hospice and palliative medicine and accepted the first round of applications in 2008.
This accreditation comes on the heels of the recognition of hospice and palliative medicine as a medical subspecialty in September 2006 by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), in February 2007 by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and in October 2008 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS). “ACGME accreditation of fellowship programs is a milestone for our discipline, further evidence of the mainstreaming of palliative medicine in the United States and an important step toward ultimately improving patient access to physicians who have specialist skills,” commented AAHPM President Russell K. Portenoy, MD.
