“The task of medicine: cure sometimes, relieve often, comfort always.”
Dr. Ambrose Pare, France (1517 – 1590)

Among the biggest obstacles to providing high standards of end of life care are negative attitudes about facing or talking about death. These death taboos and the resulting fears limit the training of health care workers in the practice of palliative care, the creation of programs and units of palliative care, and the demands from citizens for pathways to a “better death”. The featured set of photographs by American artist Cathy Greenblat, Professor Emerita of Sociology, Rutgers University, USA, Artist in Residence, CHU de Nice, France and Honorary Research Fellow, International Observatory of End of Life Care, Lancaster University, GB is o_ ered to challenge these taboos showing some examples of good end of life care in several settings in four countries: France, India, Japan, and the USA.
