The concept of the “Budapest Commitments” was launched at the EAPC Budapest Congress in June 2007 as collaboration between EAPC, the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) and the World Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA). The aim is to encourage national associations to commit themselves for one or several achievable goals in the development of palliative care in the respective countries.

The Commitments to date including the goals, the ways or methods to reach the goals as well as the means of follow up are published on the EAPC website.

At the EAPC Research Forum in Trondheim, the commitments made so far were highlighted and discussed. At the time of the Forum commitments from palliative care associations of the following countries were available: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Rep, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

The EAPC Congress in Vienna in 2009 will be an important next milestone for organisations that commit themselves to work goal oriented within the context of the Budapest Commitments.
