Mission Statement
My first impact with Palliative Care was meeting Prof. Vittorio Ventafridda and Franco De Conno, in 1989 in the division of “Terapia del Dolore e Cure Palliative” where I went to work for 6 months at their Unit to replace a secretary with the simple aim to learn Italian (just had arrived in Italy). My intention was to go back and work in business once my Italian was good enough.
In those 6 month I did not only learn Italian but I discovered the world of palliative care with really very special people and a, at that time, small international community with the same vision and great dedication. I also discovered EAPC and the struggle the Board of Directors had to organise the First EAPC congress in October 1990 in Paris, France, and started to look after this small association. The result of this engagement was a proposal from the Board of Directors, to work for the EAPC. In the meantime palliative care had also taken its place in my heart and I accepted.
The EAPC moved its head office from the Floriani Foundation, which had supported its creation to the National Cancer Institute where it is still today. EAPC has become “my baby” and is now an adolescent of 18 years. There is an Italian saying: Small children small worries – Big children big worries. The Association has grown immensely such as the movement of palliative Care has done over those last two decades. We have now reached the 10th Congress. But unfortunately the infrastructure of EAPC itself is still small. So the new Board of Directors has not an easy task and needs to work hard. I hope to still be able to go on and support the new Board with the back stage work.
