Palliatieve Hulpverlening Antwerpen v.z.w. is a pluralistic organisation that started in 1992 under impulse of physicians and health care workers intra- and extramural. For me it is important to meet the needs of the action of the network. The action of PHA is based on six principles:
(1) Stimulate cooperation between organisations and care workers to increase quality of care for the patients. Commission working is important and PHA has 10 commissions. The members have the same discipline or come together because of a common theme. The commissions operate as a think tank and are the foundation of the policy of PHA
(2) Sensibilisation of the public by for example a newsletter, a travelling exposition, publications and lectures.
(3) 24 – hour service related to the patient, family and healthcare workers based on the emancipatory concept.
(4) Coordinate volunteers.
(5) Scientific research in cooperation with the centre of general practitioners of the university of Antwerp.
(6) Monitoring and promoting professionalism, the know-how of a palliative culture. This is a very important task of the network and it’s realized by different ways of education . PHA develops training courses, organizes study programmes, coordinates workshops and gives training courses for social workers, nurses, physicians, volunteers, in cooperation with the University and colleges of Antwerp .
