1982/83: Medical doctor
1986-1988: Research fellow at the Cancer Pain Clinic, Finsen Institute, Copenhagen.
1992: Specialist in anesthesia.
1994-1997: Consultant at the Pain Centre, Bispebjerg Hospital, Copenhagen.
1997-2001: Founder and director of Dept. of Palliative Medicine, Bispebjerg Hopspital, Copenhagen.
2001-2006: Consultant at the Multidisciplinary Pain Centre, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen.
2006: Doctoral thesis.
2006: Adjunct Professor in Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy at Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Copenhagen.

Scientific interests
Scientific interests in palliative medicine and especially in different aspects of cancer pain management as symptom aetiology, epidemiology, treatment outcomes (health related quality of life, health economics, pain, cognition ect) and opioid pharmacokinetics and –dynamics.

Scientific publications
Author and co-author of more than hundred peer-reviewed articles and books/book chapters in palliative medicine and pain management. Defended the doctoral thesis “Cognitive function in cancer and chronic non-malignant pain patients” at Aarhus University, Denmark 2006.

Lectures at congresses and courses

As invited speaker given more than 200 lectures at national and international congresses and courses. Chairmanships at international meetings and organizer of international meetings in Scandinavia and abroad. Member of the editorial advisory board of Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.

Other scientific/teaching activities

Co-founder, past-president and currently vice-president of The Danish Society of Palliative Medicine and co-founder of the diploma courses: Nordic Specialist Course in Palliative Medicine and Nordic Education in Advanced Pain Medicine.
Supervisor for several PhD students and numerous teaching activities nationally and internationally.
